The Philosophy Club for high school students aims to encourage critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and thoughtful discussion around life’s most fundamental questions. One key objective is to examine morality—what it means to do the right thing and how we decide what’s right in complex situations. For example, the club might explore the famous trolley problem, a thought experiment in which a person must choose whether to pull a lever to divert a runaway trolley, sacrificing one life to save five. Debating this dilemma helps students grapple with utilitarian versus deontological ethics, prompting deeper reflection on the value of individual lives and personal responsibility. Another major objective is to explore the nature of reality itself: What is truly real? How do we know what we know? Through guided discussions, readings, and collaborative inquiry, students will learn to articulate their ideas, respectfully challenge others’ viewpoints, and develop a lifelong appreciation for philosophical thinking.
